Chapter 11

Riley had barely time to smile at the way Vince looked in his post-sex haze when Uma’s interruption wiped the dazed expression away. He didn’t know what she said or why, but Vince’s voice changed from sexy and husky to a rude growl. Vince had fled; there was no other way to describe the way he’d grabbed the key and bolted out of the room. As Riley put his clothes back on, he ran back over the conversation with Uma, but there were no clues. Vince hadn’t seemed bothered when they might have been caught together—neither was he—because they were adults and honestly it was no one’s business. He hadn’t exactly been honest, but he didn’t give off a secretive vibe during that part of the conversation. He’d grinned at Riley as if they had a delicious secret, one that Vince wanted to hold close and keep and it’d filled Riley with a rich warmth like pumpkin soup on a cold day. It wasn’t until Uma had left that Vince seemed to figure out something; but he left no clues for what had triggered the change or what that worry might be. Riley tucked that mystery away for another time. First things first, he needed to get roasted by all his mates. He turned the fan down to a less dramatic level and it lost that out of kilter rattle. Suzy shoved Chris on the shoulder, then shook Riley’s hand as well. “Maybe we should call him Paulmy; like your bro Johnler’s nickname.”

“Johnler isn’t my bro.” Chris’s grin broadened.

“Nah, he’s your...”

“Partner. Suzy, you can call him my partner.”

Suzy flung her head backwards and cackled. “Awesome, man. I thought it was just a one night stand or something.”

Chris blushed a little, his skin darkening across his cheeks. “Or something. We figured that we had to call it something else. A one night stand doesn’t really last for six months!”

“Good for you two.” Riley had slept with Chris years ago when he’d first move here, but they hadn’t really had much chemistry so nothing more had come of it. He was thrilled his two mates, Chris and Johnler, had finally seen sense and hooked up properly. He’d never been tempted to have a one night stand with Johnler—he smelled like his job—actually, that wasn’t quite true, on either count. He’d never gotten close enough to Johnler to smell him, but he worked with Riley’s nemesis—alcohol—so he was kind of off limits. In some ways it was a shame. There weren’t that many openly gay men out here, so it had crossed his
